This is really late, but ... there was an "earthquake" in DC a little while ago. Only thing is, I didn't believe it. Why? Because I'm probably the only person in DC who didn't feel it. How?!? I'm tired of trying to figure that one out. I was at lunch, minding my own business when people started flooding onto the street. My building shut down. I was forced (not at gun point) to go home. Jam packed buses drove pass me. Miss the earthquake? Make up for it with some bus drama! So, no. I didn't believe it until I actually made it home a couple hours later and saw the action figure casualties. That's when I had a drink. A really stiff one. My nerves were already shot.

Collector's Market: DC Universe Classics

The collector's market is a B-I-T-C-H. Admission? I'm full on into nostalgia. Then ... I'm a DC Fan Boy. Combine the two and you have? DC Universe Classics. Mattel rocks. It just does. My hallway book cases are LITTERED with DC action figures. I'm a collector. And, being a collector means that you have to be on top of things and ahead of the game. You pay more than you should. You learn the word: "PRE-ORDER." You have a credit card. You do a lot of purchasing. DC Universe puts out "waves" of action figures. Each figure within a wave comes with a piece of a bigger figure. (Like, Chemo, Apache Chief, Parallax, Trigon, The Monitor, etc.) When I saw the Giganta figure, I knew --- I wanted her. Having her meant I'd have to collect ALL of them in order to have her. Commander Steel - Upper & middle torso; Dr. fate - right arm; Mr. Terrific - right leg; Parademon - left arm; Vigilante - left leg; and --- the all too important -- Gentleman Ghost - head & lower torso (coochie). So, I found everybody, but --- Gentleman Ghost. Sound simple? It ain't. The Collectors Market determines that you go insane. (Well, fucking nutso.) It will remove ONE key component to make sure that you go bonkers. Us collectors (i.e. completionists) must have it all. And, I wanted Giganta. Really and trooooly. But, I couldn't find Gentleman Ghost. I wanted him as well because he was just --- cool. He came with Giganta's head and ... cooch. (Yes, I was waiting around for a woman's head and cooch. Hardy-har-har to all of us hard core gays.) Somehow, others figured this out. I had everybody but ... Gentleman Ghost. So, Gentleman Ghost (Gianta's head and cooch ... and a very tinnnnny Atom) became rare. Ebay. We used to be good friends, until ... people started price gouging. Well, I just refused to pay it. Ransom. Blackmail. Just plain RUDE. Prices fell anywhere between $75 and $150 for a head and cooch. (I didn't pay that!!!!)

But, I wanted her. Really and trooly. I have lied long enough.

In the end? I got weak. I fell in. There may have even been a couple of cocktails involved. But ... I gave in. And, thus follows the accompanying photos. It's me at my weakest. My most vulnerable. I'm also .. revealing. Sigh. Here it is: Giganta.

Here's a Brenda Starr gem I happened across. This piece is from the incredible comic great, Joe Kubert. Though listed from 1980, I haven't seen Brenda look this good in years!!! And, this short piece captures all of the mystery, adventure, intrigue and glamor that was my Brenda Starr. Oh, how I miss you.
Check out the pirate outfit. It's from one of her very first adventures from back in the 40s. Too bad she didn't get a make over like Dick Tracy drawn by one of my personal favorites, Joe Staton.

Something amazing and historic happened and I wonder if anybody even noticed it. Two of the major comic book companies, DC and Marvel released five books, each featuring BLACK PEOPLE. Five black men!!!! Well, four black men and one black boy. Yes, dammit. I still get excited when I see black people on tv, movie, books and especially comics. And, I'm even more excited to see Mr. Terrific, Static, Batwing, Firestorm and the Ultimate Spiderman prominently featuring African American, BLACK leads!!!! Totally unrelated, but all in the same month I got to see the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

She had only a few minutes on Batman: Brave and the Bold --- "Scorn of the Star Sapphire." (Brave and the Bold is a DC Fanboy's dream come true!) Keeping in mind, DC's 52 Wonder Woman premiered this week. Now, I'm on board for anything Wonder Woman. Being a child of nostalgia, I will sometimes even always support something labeled "new." But, seeing those couple of minutes of our gal in action with the Lynda Carter TV theme song blaring, the one we all know and love (and if you say you don't love it, you're lying), made me realize I could handle "new," but ... I miss the old.

David Kelly's Steven's Comics!!!!

One of my first fav queer cartoonists I discovered is David Kelly. We happened to share a common experience. He and I both wanted the Mego Wonder Woman doll as blossoming queer children in the 70s. I got mine. He got his. And, his came with a somewhat familiar tale that became the start of his Steven's Comics stories. I don't think he remembers me, but we actually ran into each other in the toy store that day!!!! (Okay. Maybe we didn't. But, still ...) Now, Northwest Press has released the entire Steven's Comics series in "Rainy Day Recess." David Kelly proves that queer children existed and weren't recruited, particularly in a time when people started coming out as gay. What he visualizes so perfectly is the innocent little boy crush, fantasy world, heart break, self awareness, integrity and when a child's imagination allowed him to have fun.

Nick Jones Jr - Green Lantern

So, did anybody else know that John Stewart was supposed to be in the Green Lantern movie with super fine Ryan Reynolds? Nick Jones Jr. (Battle Los Angeles) was supposed to play John Stewart, the man destined to also become Green Lantern to fight alongside Hal Jordan. The "black Green Lantern." The John Stewart, who was chosen to be in the Justice League cartoon - something I call "When Good Characters Go Black." Some people only know that version. It would have been exciting to see at least a cameo. Unfortunately, Mr. Fine as Hell - Jones Jr.'s Green Lantern debut must have ended up on the cursed cutting room floor.

I'm a DC Fan Boy. This movie, along with other DC animated movies, was a dream come true. Unfortunately, people seem determined to HATE this movie. I LOVED IT!!!! I have no complaints. But, the "fans" have spoken. I see it as just another strike against Comics To Film. So, congratulations, haters. Probably: No sequel. No John Stewart. No Sinestro. No Star Sapphire. No Hal Jordan. Damn, damn, damn.

In the meanwhile, look at what could have been the finest Green Lantern of all. Nick Jones, Jr. --- John Stewart.

Elisabeth Sladen Passes

My heart broke when I heard about the sudden passing of Elisabeth Sladen on Tuesday from cancer at the age of 63. Some of you were privy to my drama, heart break and tears that night. And, I appreciate your patience. No --- Michael Jackson did not move me, but Elisabeth Sladen did! (Sorry, Mike.) Elisabeth Sladen played The Doctor's most famous -- and among the most popular companion, Sarah Jane Smith, a role she began in 1973. After a return appearance in Doctor Who, "School Reunion," Sarah Jane Smith returned with her own series --- The Sarah Jane Adventures. Initially, I thought the show would be corny and I couldn't figure out why she was running around with children, but I thought the show was incredible. She fit perfectly into the Whoverse and was obviously taken seriously by the right people. The show ran four season and I'd heard it was picked up for a fifth. Really. It broke my heart because I had absolutely fallen in love with Sarah Jane and her crew: Maria, Clyde, Luke and Rani. I was totally looking forward to future adventures. But, since the DVD-BBC --- across the pond translation --- system ('series,' whatever you want to call it) is behind ... there is at least another season --- season #4, to look forward to. If you love Doctor Who, I believe you will love Sarah Jane. I will sorely miss you, Elisabeth Sladen. You were amazing --- as a reporter and investigator, Sarah Jane Smith. Or as The Doctor would say, "My Sarah Jane."

Glamazonia the Uncanny Super-Tranny by Justin Hall is a 136 page book that has been released from Northwest Press. I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Justin at the Small Press Expo a couple years back here in the DC area. (Rockville, MD is not DC. It just isn't.) Justin is one of the coolest queer cartoonist (outside of Jen Camper) that I have ever met. Plus, he does incredibly hot erotica. Not only is this dude incredibly talented, he's prolific. The man actually gets work done! And, his work is INCREDIBLE!!! (Plus, I hear that he's secretly ruling the West Coast in queer comics. Shhh.) Everyone would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn't pick up this book. A 30 page preview (Yes -- 30 pages!) is available here! It's available for purchase here! What's even more rewarding to me is that the book has special guests Dave Davenport (Hard to Swallow), Mari Naomi, Paige Braddock (Jane's World), Steve MacIssac (Shirtlifter), Diego Gomez and my own personal FAV, Rob Kirby (Curbside, Boy Trouble, Three). Brenda Starr Retires

After 70 years in the newspaper biz, Brenda Starr, Reporter is being retired by the Chicago Tribune. Writer, Mary Schmich and artist, June Brigman have decided to call it quits. Rather than find a new team, the Tribune has decided to cancel the strip. (I knew I should have finished that two year script! Brenda would have had story lines FOREVER! Starr Twinkle! Basil! Hank! B-Bomb! Pesky! Merrie Ryder! Wanda Fonda & Sage, etc. Didn't want to draw it --- just wanted to write it!) But, our beloved red headed reporter will not be forgotten. She is being commemorated in a new hard backed, full color compilation series of Sunday and Daily strips by Hermes Press in June 2011.

I have been wanting to write about Brenda on this blog for AGES, but every time I started --- I would honestly just get overwhelmed. Like now. She had SO much history. SO many adventures. So much of it SO incredible. She influenced me SO much in my life as a storyteller and cartoonist. I just wanted to do her justice. In the end, I don't know if I can. But, I will try. This is just a tid bit. Brenda's creator, Dale Messick was a genius (1906 - 2005). She changed her name from Dalia in order to get in the door and prove that a strong female lead could head a strip. Originally, Brenda was supposed to be a girl pirate. But, I'm glad that changed. She evolved into the glamorous red headed reporter that chased story after story, helped people, solved problems, then eventually met her Mystery Man. (Now ... she chased him for over 30 years, but still ... So, hang in there, gurls!) I hate to see her go, but I'm happy she's actually not going anywhere. Dale ... you did good, girl. It's about time you got more props. This is just the beginning !

Bishop Eddie Long. Okay. Because I'm not a "churchy" (i.e. "church person"), I had no idea who he was. But, after I found out --- I became RIVETED!!!! OMG!!! (I don't normally get sucked in like this, but --- Snarf! Guffaw! Chuckle!) What a scandal!!!! We got another one who needs to go down (and --- wink --- not in a good way). He's some kind of Religious person in Atlanta who led some kind of black church march against our gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people. He led a parade of hatred against gay marriage. But, as always ... those that doth protest too much ... "A DL closet queen" (tip o' the nib to Tanya in regards to my first ever hate mail from a really closeted/confused "fan," years ago). Well, apparently enough people seemed to know that this married "man of the cloth" was recruiting young boys into his own jet-setting, personal/private SEX club. I'm always glad when these people are exposed because they're SO much a part of the "straight" community that never suspects them. (Wake up, straight people!!! Why do you even care we want to be with the same gender?!? You will still get your rights.) When this info was passed on to me, I childishly called him -- and I quote from an e-mail: "a low-class, no good, self-hating homophobic, closet case." Oh, and ... I (sheepishly) hoped he would go down in "FLAMES." I still mean it. I'm not taking it back. I'm tired of people trying to destroy us and for some reason we're supposed to protect them and "understand." As far as Bishop Long is concerned, I'm sure we need to stay tuned because there's more to come. I hope others surface (Aren't we up to four under-aged victims?) and bring him down. He's supposed to respond tomorrow. On a Sunday. As if that matters.
I don't know what's going on here, but this is hysterical!!! (Looks like they're making out --- in public.) They seem really into it.

Okay, I didn't come up with the title. It's in Veronica comics #202. The Archies get their very first openly gay character, Kevin Keller. They must be trying to keep up with the times because just last month, there was an interracial relationship between Archie Andrews and Valerie Smith from Josie & the Pussycats!!! (They got my money over that one, too.) Personally, I thought the story was funny from the rivalry between Betty and Veronica, to how much Veronica and Jughead seem to dislike one another, the joke Jughead plays on Veronica, and Archie's jealousy. The "Bro-mance," a word I think is actually kind of funny --- normally between two straight men, is between Kevin and Jughead Jones. (Didn't Homer Simpsons tell somebody in Waverly Hills he was cool because could turn words into dudes?) Kevin and Jughead bond over a hamburger eating contest, share a love for food and comic books. Anyway, I thought it was funny. I'm sure we probably won't meet his gay friends (like the one he kept texting) or see him ever kiss a man, but ... baby steps. I guess. Since I'm still on the Archie tip, I'm celebrating Riverdale's "only gay in the village" with a pin-up.

J.J. Abrams, creator of "Alias" and "Lost" has a new show coming out in a couple of weeks on NBC, a spy drama called "Undercovers." What's most exciting is that the leads are black. Superfine Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha Raw star as Steven and Samantha Bloom, retired spies who get reactivated by the C.I.A. I knew there was something familiar about Gugu. Then, I discovered --- she's Tish Jones! Martha Jones's sister!!! Doctor Who's companion, Martha Jones!!! I had originally heard "Undercovers" was being compared to "Hart to Hart," one of my favorite shows back in the 70s. That was enough to grab my attention. I'm hoping this series will be good enough to survive with two black leads.

I have truly enjoyed the CW's Vampire Diaries. I hesitated at first because of the obvious Buffy influences, the beautiful, thin girls, sultry, muscled boys, well dressed teenagers and the obvious love triangle between protagonist Elena (Nina Dobrev) and the Salvatore brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Lost's Ian Somerhalder). Even though there was the CW's usual glitz, glamor and teenage angst in full bloom, it was a show that took itself seriously from the start. Mind you, it will never be Buffy --- because make no mistake about it --- Buffy is Buffy and she started it all. But, I was drawn in from the opening sequence. It's supposedly True Blood without the nudity. Supposedly.

Here's what this entry is really about: I still get excited when I see black people on television. Still! Elena's best friend is the beautiful, Bonnie (Katerina Graham). At first, I thought Bonnie was just going to be "the best friend." Instead, it's revealed that she's from a long line of witches in Mystic Falls. But, she doesn't realize it, so we go along with her as she discovers her powers. Her Grams is played by none other than Jasmine Guy! Yes, the Jasmine "Whitley Gilbert" Guy! Bonnie's great great grandmother, Emily, revealed in one ghost sequence and then flashbacks, is played by Bianca Lawson (daughter of Richard Lawson - who I will always love for his role in my favorite movie ever - "Poltergeist." Bianca also played Kendra the Vampire Slayer on Buffy.) Gina Torres even plays Bree, an old girlfriend of Damon's. Black people!!! Yea!!!!

So ... SPOILERS: ---- The drama unfolds ... Stefan meets and falls in love with Elena, the protagonist. Elena is a doppelganger for Katherine, the vampire who seduced and sired Damon and Stephan in 1864. But, Katherine and 26 other vampires were captured, then imprisoned in a tomb underneath a church for 100-some years. Damon is still OBSESSED, after all these years, with Katherine. Damon is E-V-I-L. He's a real butthole. It's obvious, in spite of his actions, he's supposed to win you over. (Think Buffy's, Spike.) Elena believes that all he has to do is tap into his "human side." Yeah, right. All that aside ... the tomb is opened by Bonnie and Grams. They break the seal and accidentally release ... the vampires. Some of them are really angry.

From the wreckage came a swollen, shrunken face. As he came closer to the tomb's opening, I realized --- Gasp! He's BLACK! As Harper, he crawled from the tomb, all swollen and gray. He found his way into the woods and --- took an innocent life in order to revive himself. Hey! The boy was hungry. When the deterioration, gray skin and hunger dissipated, I realized: He is hot. Sterling Sulieman, the Oakland born, but Island of Oaho-raised actor from "All My Children" was one of the newest vampires in Mystic Falls. He wasn't a slave either, but a soldier. Unlike some of the others, he wasn't angry. He bands together with leader Pearl (Kelly Hu) and her daughter, Anna (Malese Jow). Loyally at Pearl's side, he helps other vampires acclimate themselves to the new world.

REAL SPOILER: I'm trying to figure something out. If you watch this show, please let me know. Pearl is murdered by Elena's mortal/human, uncle/daddy, John Gilbert (David Anders - "Sark" from Alias). As she collapses to the ground and dies, she falls into the arms of Harper. But, by time Anna finds her body, she's alone. What happened to Harper?!? It wasn't clear to me that he was killed as well. There was only one body. I'm hoping he'll resurface. The good and loyalty in him was highlighted when Stefan was kidnapped and being tortured by the vamps that Pearl couldn't rehabilitate. He had Damon spared his life for a reason. Did he find Katherine? Anyway, here's hoping that he returns.

Then, there was the big deal of re-vamping, which initiated this blogspot. I think this is when I started being a little fashionably conscious with them.
This one never made the cut. But, here it is. (Nobody has seen this, right?)
Did this one make it? I'm not sure. I know that initially, in the sketches, Dustin was in place of Mohammed. In the end, neither version made it.
This one made it. New era. It's amazing who's there and who isn't. Life is so dramatic. Eric might be back. Dustin? Closure at some point.

Patrick Dancy - Living Well

I didn't know when it would happen, but I always knew it would. Patrick Dancy, my boyhood crush from the 90s --- has surfaced!!! (I made my crush official in this original post.) Patrick J. Dancy was one of the Guys Next Door, a singing and dancing group that also had a Saturday morning skit show. (The other Guys were Damon, Eddie, Bobby and Chris). But, Patrick was the one that kept me coming back. After many posts on this blog (about my art and just ... things in general I like), Patrick has clearly been my most popular post, generating the most comments and excitement. And, I am more than happy to follow up (with Patrick's permission, of course), with a couple of his pictures. It's just to show everyone who's interested that he's looking incredible, sounds like he's living well and having a great times bouncing from coast to coast. (The body is cut up! Your work is paying off.) Thanks for this moment, Patrick. (P.S. When are the Guys getting a DVD so that it can be Saturday morning with the Guys all over again?)

It's hard to believe that we're more than half way through this year and I haven't put out a single issue of Black Gay Boy Fantasy. Sorry, folks. It's just plain tacky. BUT --- I have been working. I did hint that the gang would be going on a little trip and --- it turns out they are. (Well, did.) The format's a little different. A much longer issue. A discarded script off to the side. You catch some of the details. I had fun doing it. (Okay. I'm still working on it.) But, here's a little glimpse.

Rob Kirby's New Gig: "Three"

Rob Kirby's "Curbside" comic strip was one of those strips I loved instantly. (Along with David Kelly's "Steven.") I loved his style. I loved his stories. He's a helluva writer. I loved the fact he had black gay characters who actually wanted to be with one another. And, he has a smashing sense of humor. I had the pleasure of finally meeting Rob after loving his work for so many years, because of Juicy Mother and Boy Trouble 2: Born To Trouble. I had a story in Boy Trouble called "Click - Download." It was alllllll about my adventures in porn. (Collecting and stealing, not starring.) Plus, it was the first time I ever did a story in full color. Rob completed his run with Curbside, took a break and is now back at the drawing board, putting out an anthology of comics entitled "Three." It looks like three queer cartoonist get their turn, each issue, at telling different stories. First up is Eric Orner and Joey Alison Sayers. On top of "Three," Rob has even re-vamped and re-launched his website, re-titled: Rob Kirby Comics. "Three" is also available for pre-order. Support the queer comic arts!!!

Queer Cartoonist ATTACK!!! (Part 2)

Well, it's over. Sadly. It was an incredible weekend. It started out ... challenging. More than a few hours on the New Jersey Turn Pike. EZPass drama. (Not really.) Getting to the first panel late. Parking drama. (Manhattan is not tourist friendly.) A flop house!!!! Peeling paint, dank dwellings and bed bugs. Oh, my! (Hotel Pennsylvania = European hostel.) Saved by lesbians. Brooklyn is bigger than D.C. Hanging with a comix legend. Train rides. A mouse. Cocktails at 10am. Vietnamese and Lebanese food. Sigh. A great time was had by all. Members of the Juicy Mother crew were reunited for Attack of the Queer Cartoonist. Check out my previous blog entry. There were nice turn outs for each event. For more info about our weekend, check out Howard's blog. He's got some things to say, too. Jennifer Camper (Juicy Mother), Ivan Velez (Tales From The Closet), Joan Hilty (Bitter Girl), and Howard Cruse (Stuck Rubber Baby, Wendell) really turned out a great event, discussing gay comix and their role in it.

Aqualad!!!!

This is what I call: "When Good Characters Go BLACK!!!" (Like Grover from the Percy Jackson books, Lafayette & Tara with "True Blood," John Stewart - Green Lantern headlining the Justice League cartoon.) DC Comics is about to introduce a new Aqualad to the world of comic books and television. (The original Aqualad, who used to hang with Aquaman, is now a character called Tempest.) A new animated series called "Young Justice" has been created, using the characters of Superboy, Speedy (really Arrowette), Ms. Martin (I love you!), Robin, Kid Flash (or is he Impulse?) and Aqualad!!!! (Where the hell is Wonder Girl?) If you don't know, all of the characters of Young Justice are really the sidekicks of the big, major heroes like Superman, Green Arrow, Martin Manhunter, Batman, Flash and Aquaman. What's most exciting is that Aqualad is black!!! Yea!!! It's about time. I think it's DC's responsibility to start consciously putting out some long lasting decent black characters. Their track record isn't too great with keeping characters alive. Especially, people of color. Apparently, the "new Atom," the microscopic superhero was reinvented as an Asian man. Sounds ground breaking, right? Well, apparently, he wasn't popular enough and --- now he's dead. Ray Palmer, the original has returned. (DC is really brutal in the Killing Heroes Department.) So, hopefully, this new Aqualad will stay around and make comic book history.
